PayEm is a global procurement and spend management company that brings control, transparency, and automation to an organization’s finance processes. They recently partnered with American Express to offer virtual cards for their customers. PayEm tapped Skyflow to securely connect with AmEx, and to isolate, protect, and govern any sensitive PCI data shared while virtual cards are distributed, used and managed.

The Challenge
PayEm enabled a new integration with American Express. The integration allows Amex Card Members the ability to create and distribute on-demand virtual Cards to employees, freelancers, candidates, or other authorized users for business payments and expenses via PayEm's platform. This can all be done using an existing American Express Card account.
PayEm needed a partner with a comprehensive and customizable privacy solution, PCI compliance, and a team with industry expertise that shared PayEm’s vision for a reimagined approach to finance.
The Skyflow Solution
For PayEm, Skyflow enabled a secure connection to Amex, and a way to protect and secure sensitive card and user information without impacting the use of Virtual Cards. This comprehensive privacy architecture helped the PayEm team bring their partnership with American Express to life.
- Skyflow Data Privacy Vault delivers security, compliance, and data residency all via a simple API.
- Sensitive data is isolated in Skyflow, and protected with end-to-end encryption and tokenization. This ensures PCI is secure, while remaining usable for workflows.
- Unified APIs enable Payem to make secure calls from within Skyflow to partners like Amex to retrieve credit data, run KYC checks, issue cards, and process payments.
- This keeps sensitive PCI out of PayEm’s backend and ultimately reduces their compliance scope.
- With Skyflow’s robust governance engine, PayEm can control who sees what data, when, and where. Customizable RBAC, ABAC, and/or PBAC policies define how sensitive data is accessed and used.
- Every action involving sensitive data is logged and auditable, which streamlines complex compliance processes.
- Help automate reimbursement filing for employees by giving them on-demand virtual Cards for one-time or recurring expenses such as meals, business travel, or office supplies.
This was a first of its kind partnership for Amex, so alongside the PayEm team, Skyflow worked to create a custom, secure integration. Here is what the partnership enables for PayEm’s customers:
- Help automate reimbursement filing for employees by giving them on-demand virtual Cards for one-time or recurring expenses such as meals, business travel, or office supplies.
- Establish specific controls for each on-demand virtual Card payment, including spending limits, expiration dates, and allowed merchant categories.
- Pay suppliers using on-demand virtual Cards and take advantage of their American Express billing cycle to manage cash flow for their business until their Card payment is due.
- Earn the rewards of their eligible American Express Card when they use on-demand virtual Cards for business payments.
- Pay with enhanced security by removing the need for merchants to see or store their underlying American Express Card account number.
